  • Ndigbo in Lagos endorse Sanwo-Olu, confer title on him

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos state, has been endorsed by the Igbo community in the state.

At an event held at the National Stadium in Surulere, Igbo residents gathered in their large numbers and pledged support for Sanwo-Olu and Obafemi Hamzat, his running mate.

H.N. Ohazurike, Eze Ndigbo of Lagos,  also conferred Ugo Chinyere Eze title on Sanwo-Olu. The title means the “greatest gift from God”.

The event was attended by all Eze Ndigbo from all local government areas in Lagos, each pledging to mobilise Igbo residents in their communities to work for the success of the APC candidate.

Responding to the gesture, Sanwo-Olu described Igbo people as “critical stakeholders” in the Lagos project, promising to give Ndigbo a good representation in his government if elected.

The APC candidate said the story of the commercial nerve centre status which Lagos attained many decades ago would not be complete without the resilience of Igbo traders in the state, adding that the endorsement would be the beginning of a new mutually benefiting relationship between the government and Igbo community.

Sanwo-Olu said: “I am expressing my profound appreciation to the Ndigbo community in Lagos for the traditional title bestowed on me, the Ugo Chinyere Eze. I thank you all from the depth of my heart for this honour and the endorsement you have just given me and my running mate.

“We are starting another journey together in our effort to build a greater Lagos that will be prosperous for all residents. We will not discriminate against any ethnic groups in this journey. Every ethnic group represented in Lagos is a critical stakeholder and we will carry everyone along, as we have resolved to run an all-inclusive government. Just as you pronounced me to be gift from God, I promise to be a precious gift you will be proud of if elected as your governor.”

Eze Ohazurike prayed for the APC candidate and his running mate, reassuring them that Igbo votes in Lagos would go with APC.

  • 5 Places Where Sun Never Sets

A 24 hour to 20 hour daytime which varies per the proximity to the pole, for an extended time period, that essentially means that for weeks and months altogether it is bright and sunny! These places obviously have a specific geographical location, close to the poles of the earth. This phenomenon occurs because the Earth is tilted on its axis by approximately 23 degrees. At the poles, North Pole and South Pole, this means that the sun only rises and sets once each year

These phenomena are observed more near the North Pole, the Arctic Circle, owing to it having human settlements. And even though they also occur in southern regions near the Antarctic Circle, owing to it being an uninhabited continent, it is only ever experienced by scientist missions or the odd adventurer. The maximum timelines for this phenomenon are: At the South Pole, the sun rises on September 21 and does not set until March 22, the following year. At the North Pole, the sun rises on March 22 and sets on September 21, the same year.

There are many countries with areas within or bordering the Arctic Circle to where you can plan your exotic holiday. Some of these areas include the northernmost parts of Canada, Greenland, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Alaska and Iceland.

Are you planning a vacation to the place/places where the sun never sets or to a land of the midnight sun, a place where in summer the sun can often be seen past midnight? Then read on to know more so that you can plan an exotic holiday to just such a destination. Some destinations are listed below:

  • Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and Obafemi Hamzat Unveils “THEME”, Their 5 Pillars of Development #ForAGreaterLagos – Gbolahan Ogundimu-Odusanya.

The 3-time Lagos Commissioner, who is a graduate of University of Lagos and an alumnus of Harvard Kennedy School of Government, was the brain behind many reforms that birthed key transformational initiatives in Lagos such as the private sector-led Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Lagos State Pension Commission, Lagos Bus Management (LAGBUS) among others.

APC Lagos Gubernatorial Candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a series of television interviews and special events unveiled “THEME”, the 5 Pillars of Development agenda for a greater Lagos, while calling on his opponents to make the campaign season about issues that affect the people.

As an advisor to the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) on privatisation, concession and commercialisation of a number of public assets under the Federal Government privatisation programme, Sanwo-Olu had the privilege of working on some landmark deals that resulted in the optimisation of public assets including the Aluminum Smelter Company (ALSCON), National Theatre, Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, Ikoyi Hotels Limited. Sanwo-Olu also worked on the Federal Government Debt Conversion Programme.

Sanwo-Olu was at Television Continental, Channels Television, Lagos Television, Nigeria info FM, Wazobia FM and the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria in a very busy week of agenda setting and stakeholders engagement.

Sanwo-Olu unveiled the acronym, ‘THEME’’ for his policy initiatives, which he detailed as follows:

    T- Traffic Management & Transportation

“Our plan is to integrate road, rail and water transportation in Lagos to solve the problem of commuting within the metropolis. We will fix all bad roads and expand our road infrastructure. We will complete existing road projects and fix inner city roads. We will improve navigation on our waterways to facilitate water transportation and promote private investment. Part of our plan is to complete the ongoing Blue Line rail project from Okokomaiko-Marina and kick-start the Red line from Agbado to Marina.

“On traffic management, we have identified over 60 gridlock points as the major causes of traffic around Lagos. We are going to work with the federal government to complete the Lagos-Apapa road, build a 5000-capacity trailer park and also work with the Nigerian Ports Authority for a strict on-call system that notifies trailers when to pick-up containers to avoid the indefinite waiting period. This is a very important part of our plan. We have a comprehensive strategy for achieving set goals. We are particularly committed to reducing travel time within Lagos”.

    H- Health & Environment

“Our healthcare plan will be anchored on comprehensive health insurance scheme for Lagosians to improve access and affordability. We will improve primary and complete many secondary health facilities. We will work with private investors as well to ensure that Lagos is the health care destination for Nigerians. I am meeting with different health care stakeholders, and was a guest at the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria end of the year event, where we discussed ways to improve health care delivery in Lagos.

“To keep our environment clean and healthy, we will rejig the waste management system by getting LAWMA to deliver better on its mandate as the regulator, while the PSP model will be made to respond better in collection of waste in Lagos. On the advocacy, we have plan to turn waste to wealth. This we will do by incentivising waste sorting by our people. We must begin to separate organic waste from other household waste and put them in separate waste bags for recycling companies that will turn waste to primary and secondary raw materials. Those who properly sort their waste can make money”.

    E- Education & Technology

“Our plan is to increase access to public education in Lagos, especially public primary and secondary schools. We will immediately embark on renovation of our schools and make them conducive for learning. Teachers will be trained for capacity enhancement in modern teaching methodology. We want to make teaching a more lucrative field of interest and attract the best of teachers to Lagos schools. We want to work with our educational institutions to improve curriculum and include entrepreneurial studies in our educational programmes.

“We also want to create a smart economy on the back of technology. We will create incubation hubs in Lagos for technology startups to flourish, while also ensuring that we introduce coding into our public school curriculum.

“I understand the transformative power of technology. Technology will improve the rule of law, education, ease of doing business and government processes. Technology will reduce approval process circle in public-private sector dealings. It will improve government efficiency. Giving Entrepreneurs and SMEs the opportunity to thrive will lead to more jobs and more public-private sector partnerships”.

    M- Making Lagos a 21st century economy

“We will support the private sector by creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. We will simplify access to government services to make the private sector blossom. We are going to work with the Power Distribution and Power Generating companies to solve the problem of power in Lagos. By this, we will have enough power in Lagos to drive the economy and improve the lives of the citizens. We provide more infrastructure and improve the existing ones to support private businesses and increase productivity of Lagosians. Lagos should be a 24-hour economy. Security will be very key item on our policy agenda. We will strengthen security agencies in Lagos and equip them to do better”.

    E- Entertainment & Tourism

“Lagos is the centre of culture and entertainment capital of Africa. We will boost our creative economy with tourism, culture and entertainment. We will develop all our tourism assets in Lagos and create tourism calendar around our important events, like the Eyo festival –  such that it will attract local and international tourists. We will work with the music, film and fashion industries to make Lagos an international tourist destination.

“Again, security and infrastructure are key to tourism and entertainment economy because people must feel safe to go out anytime of the day and visit tourist centres”.

According to Sanwo-Olu, specific details of the THEME initiatives will be unveiled to the public.

Supporting the 5 main pillars, he has also listed the following as areas of focus; Infrastructure, housing, ease of doing business, land reform and power.

Every Sunday on a twitter chat, Babajide Sanwo-Olu(@JideSanwoolu) engages with the electorate, directly answering questions about his plans for a greater Lagos.

  • I set up Nigeria’s first pension commission, says Sanwo-Olu

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Lagos guber election, says people should get it out of their “blocked brains” that he came out from nowhere.

The former commissioner of establishment, training, and pensions, said he started the first pension commission anywhere in Nigeria, stating that he had always been in the system.

Sanwo-Olu, who said he has 30 years of postgraduate experience, added that he worked in the private sector for 17 years and the public sector for 13 years.

Clearing the air on his controversial emergence as governorship candidate in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu told Channels TV that those complaining can’t cry more than the bereaved.

“I really don’t know what controversy you are talking about. You cannot cry more than the bereaved. You cannot start a race until when INEC say you start the race,” Sanwo-Olu said.

“You can not start an agenda of politics if the right atmosphere is not ripe. There is no need for me raising my hand two-three years ago, if there is no vacancy, if there is no means, if there is no time that says that this is time for you to start.

“It was when they said we should start that I started. It is just that all of us need to take it out of our blocked brains that if you don’t know somebody and you now know somebody, you would be wondering where does this guy appeared from?

“I have always been there. I have done a lot of firsts, firsts, first, which are not directly attributable to me but which we need to bring out now.”

I PAID THE FIRST N18,000 MINIMUM WAGE

The APC candidate went on to reel out his achievements, including the set up of Lagos Pension Commission and LAGBUS.

“I was the one that set up the security trust fund, a lot of people don’t know that The first tenure of BRF, within the first two months, with all of the contacts I have in the private sector, we got all of the bank MDs, we raised over 260 vehicles in the first six months,” he added.

“I ran the security trust fund before my dear uncle, Makanjuola, became the chairman, I brought out the blueprint.

“Secondly, I started LAGBUS, I registered LAGBUS, I wasn’t commissioner of transport. We went to Cairo, we did a 200-bus procurement off-balance sheet, meaning that without any recourse to government.

“I started the first pension commission in this country, even before the federal government started their own commission. I was the person that paid the first N18,000 minimum wage before even the federal government paid theirs.”

  • LASU will get Faculty of Pharmacy, says Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has assured members of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) that he will give the Lagos State University (LASU) a Faculty of Pharmacy, if elected next year.

Sanwo-Olu made the promise yesterday during his interaction with the state chapter of the society.

The APC candidate noted that after more than three decades of existence, the state university should be a centre of academic excellence for the production of manpower in pharmacy.

He said: “To strengthen the profession and boost manpower in the field of Pharmacy, I am convinced that our state university should have a Faculty of Pharmacy. If elected, we will make sure LASU, within our four years, have a Faculty of Pharmacy. It is not just right that we have a medical college without a Faculty of Pharmacy. I promise you that our government will ensure that everything is done to make a Faculty of Pharmacy a reality for the state-owned university.

“As a professional body of pharmacists, I will implore you to give us a position paper on what we need to do that will enable us achieve our objective. I can assure that as government, we will do all within our powers to make it a reality.”

The APC candidate told the pharmacists the importance he attached to their profession and the Health sector.

He added: “Your profession is one of the most important fields of human existence. No one can joke with the Health sector. So, when I received your invitation, I pledged to attend this event, regardless of my other schedules because it is about health and we must listen to you.”

The chairman of the state chapter of the PSN, Mrs. B. T. O. Adeniran, urged Sanwo-Olu to help pharmacists in the state when he gets to government.

She described turnaround time in getting drugs at government hospitals across the state as cumbersome.

“We need the government to look into the welfare and working condition of pharmacists working in Lagos State. We want an upward review of salary and allowances. On capacity development, we need more training for our members so that we can serve the state and the public better as integral part of the health system,” Mrs Adeniran said.
